RESUMO

X-ray circular dichroism, arising from the contrast in X-ray absorption between opposite photon helicities, serves as a spectroscopic tool to measure the magnetization of ferromagnetic materials and identify the handedness of chiral crystals. Antiferromagnets with crystallographic chirality typically lack X-ray magnetic circular dichroism because of time-reversal symmetry, yet exhibit weak X-ray natural circular dichroism. Here, the observation of giant natural circular dichroism in the Ni L3-edge X-ray absorption of Ni3TeO6 is reported, a polar and chiral antiferromagnet with effective time-reversal symmetry. To unravel this intriguing phenomenon, a phenomenological model is proposed that classifies the movement of photons in a chiral crystal within the same symmetry class as that of a magnetic field. The coupling of X-ray polarization with the induced magnetization yields giant X-ray natural circular dichroism, revealing typical ferromagnetic behaviors allowed by the symmetry in an antiferromagnet, i.e., the altermagnetism of Ni3TeO6. The findings provide evidence for the interplay between magnetism and crystal chirality in natural optical activity. Additionally, the first example of a new class of magnetic materials exhibiting circular dichroism is established with time-reversal symmetry.

RESUMO

The extremely overdoped cuprates are generally considered to be Fermi liquid metals without exotic orders, whereas the underdoped cuprates harbor intertwined states. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, using Cu L_{3}-edge and O K-edge resonant x-ray scattering, we reveal a charge order (CO) correlation in overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (0.35≤x≤0.6) beyond the superconducting dome. This CO has a periodicity of ∼6 lattice units with correlation lengths of ∼20 lattice units. It shows similar in-plane momentum and polarization dependence and dispersive excitations as the CO of underdoped cuprates, but its maximum intensity differs along the c direction and persists up to 300 K. This CO correlation cannot be explained by the Fermi surface instability and its origin remains to be understood. Our results suggest that CO is prevailing in the overdoped metallic regime and requires a reassessment of the picture of overdoped cuprates as weakly correlated Fermi liquids.

RESUMO

Here, we report the fabrication of the unique intertwined Ni9 S8 /Ag2 S composite structure with hexagonal shape from their molecular precursors by one-pot thermal decomposition. Various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were utilized to confirm the Ni9 S8 /Ag2 S intertwined structure. Powder X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis suggest that there is an enrichment of Ni9 S8 phase in Ni9 S8 /Ag2 S. The presence of Ag2 S in Ni9 S8 /Ag2 S improves the conductivity by reducing the interfacial energy and charge transfer resistance. When Ni9 S8 /Ag2 S is employed as an electrocatalyst for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, it requires a low overpotential of 152 mV for HER and 277 mV for OER to obtain the geometrical current density of 10 mA cm-2 , which is definitely superior to that of its components Ni9 S8 and Ag2 S. This work provides a simple design route to develop an efficient and durable electrocatalyst with outstanding OER and HER performance and the present catalyst (Ni9 S8 /Ag2 S) deserves as a potential candidate in the field of energy conversion systems.

RESUMO

CONTEXT.: Evidence of T-cell clonality is often critical in supporting the diagnosis of a T-cell lymphoma. OBJECTIVES.: To retrospectively explore the significance of copy number losses at the 14q11.2 T-cell receptor α locus in relation to the presence of a T-cell neoplasm and proportion of T cells by targeted next-generation sequencing. DESIGN.: Targeted next-generation sequencing data from 139 tissue biopsies, including T-cell lymphomas, B-cell lymphomas, classic Hodgkin lymphomas, nonhematopoietic malignancies, and normal samples, were reviewed for copy number losses involving the T-cell receptor α gene segments at chr14q11.2. RESULTS.: We found that biallelic or homozygous deletion of 14q11.2 was found in most (28 of 33, 84.8%) T-cell lymphomas. The magnitude of 14q11.2 loss showed a statistically significant correlation with the proportion of T cells in lymphoma tissue samples. Copy number losses could also be detected in other lymphomas with high numbers of T cells (8 of 32, 25% of B-cell lymphomas, 4 of 4 classical Hodgkin lymphomas), though biallelic/homozygous deletion of 14q11.2 was not significantly observed outside of T-cell lymphomas. Most nonhematopoietic neoplasms and normal tissues (59 of 64, 92.2%) showed no significant copy number losses involving the T-cell receptor α locus at chr14q11.2. CONCLUSIONS.: Analysis of copy number losses at the T-cell receptor α locus chr14q11.2 with targeted next-generation sequencing can potentially be used to estimate the proportion of T cells and detect T-cell neoplasms.

RESUMO

We present the cobalt 2p3d resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of Co3O4. Guided by multiplet simulation, the excited states at 0.5 and 1.3 eV can be identified as the 4 T 2 excited state of the tetrahedral Co2+ and the 3 T 2g excited state of the octahedral Co3+, respectively. The ground states of Co2+ and Co3+ sites are determined to be high-spin 4 A 2(T d ) and low-spin 1 A 1g (Oh ), respectively. It indicates that the high-spin Co2+ is the magnetically active site in Co3O4. Additionally, the ligand-to-metal charge transfer analysis shows strong orbital hybridization between the cobalt and oxygen ions at the Co3+ site, while the hybridization is weak at the Co2+ site.

RESUMO

The procurement of food grains from farmers is one of the biggest challenges under the COVID-19 outbreak due to country-wise lockdowns. The present study aims to reconfigure the existing food grain supply chain network. The study advances the extant literature by proposing a novel mathematical model that considers the government guidelines issued to procure food grains from farmers under the COVID-19 situation. The model includes personal distancing, a key parameter relevant in the COVID-19 crisis, and has remained unaddressed in the existing literature. The proposed model is tested in India. The effect of different parameters like personal distancing cost, carbon emission cost, fixed cost, and transportation cost is also investigated under a given set of procurement centers. Finally, the procurement schedule for each procurement center is generated, which is especially useful for managing its activities and is also helpful to farmers to streamline the process. Results indicate that the proposed model is highly effective under pandemic emergencies like the current COVID-19 crisis. Policymakers and the government will find this model helpful in drafting relevant policies regarding food grain procurement under emergencies such as the COVID-19 outbreak. The distribution segment of the supply chain network is not part of the present research work. In future studies, this part could be then added to the whole of the procurement process, and both procurement and distribution can be assessed together again.

RESUMO

In this work, an electrically/chemically tunable highly sensitive photodetector based on mixed dimensional heterojunction of graphene and planar InN nanowires (NW) is presented. Controlled partial oxidation of InN has been employed to effectively reduce the high surface carrier concentration of InN, which normally prevents it from forming good rectifying contact with graphene. The resulting surface modified InN NWs have been found to form excellent Schottky junction with graphene, with an increase in effective Schottky barrier height (SBH) by over 1.1 eV and a ratio of forward and reverse bias currents exceeding 4 orders of magnitude. Moreover, very strong barristor (gate tunable heterojunction) action has been observed, withIon/Ioff ≈ 4 orders of magnitude, and SBH increase by >0.3 eV. The barristor has been demonstrated to be highly sensitive to light, especially in the ultra-voilet, visible and near IR spectra. Responsivity was found to be widely tunable by gate voltage, with the highest value exceeding 1000 A W-1. Rise and fall times being in the range of hundreds of ms are indicative of photoconductive gain, which can be attributed to the ultra high responsivity. A method of semi-permanent molecular doping has been demonstrated to realize a two-terminal version of the photodetector, where the desired responsivity can still be achieved without requiring a back gate terminal, enabling the device to be realized on insulating substrates. The effect of encapsulation has been studied as a function of time, which has showed the long term stability of the dopant-induced enhancement and ultra high responsivity of the barristor photodetector.

RESUMO

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) are diseases occurring in immunocompromised patients after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) or solid organ transplantation (SOT). Although PTLD occurs rarely, it may be associated with poor outcomes. In most cases, PTLD is driven by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Few studies have investigated the mutational landscape and gene expression profile of PTLD. In our study, we performed targeted deep sequencing and RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq) on 16 cases of florid follicular hyperplasia (FFH) type PTLD and 15 cases of other PTLD types that include: ten monomorphic (M-PTLD), three polymorphic (P-PTLD), and two classic Hodgkin lymphoma type PTLDs (CHL-PTLD). Our study identified recurrent mutations in JAK3 in five of 15 PTLD cases and one of 16 FFH-PTLD cases, as well as 16 other genes that were mutated in M-PTLD, P-PTLD, CHL-PTLD and FFH-PTLD. Digital image analysis demonstrated significant differences in single cell area, major axis, and diameter when comparing cases of M-PTLD and P-PTLD to FFH-PTLD. No morphometric relationship was identified with regards to a specific genetic mutation. Our findings suggest that immune regulatory pathways play an essential role in PTLD, with the JAK/STAT pathway affected in many PTLDs.

RESUMO

Cystatin C (CysC) plays diverse protective roles under conditions of neuronal challenge. We investigated whether CysC protects from trisomy-induced pathologies in a mouse model of Down syndrome (DS), the most common cause of developmental cognitive and behavioral impairments in humans. We have previously shown that the segmental trisomy mouse model, Ts[Rb(12.1716)]2Cje (Ts2) has DS-like neuronal and behavioral deficiencies. The current study reveals that transgene-mediated low levels of human CysC overexpression has a preventive effect on numerous neuropathologies in the brains of Ts2 mice, including reducing early and late endosome enlargement in cortical neurons and decreasing loss of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons (BFCNs). Consistent with these cellular benefits, behavioral dysfunctions were also prevented, including deficits in nesting behavior and spatial memory. We determined that the CysC-induced neuroprotective mechanism involves activation of the phosphotidylinositol kinase (PI3K)/AKT pathway. Activating this pathway leads to enhanced clearance of accumulated endosomal substrates, protecting cells from DS-mediated dysfunctions in the endosomal system and, for BFCNs, from neurodegeneration. Our findings suggest that modulation of the PI3/AKT pathway offers novel therapeutic interventions for patients with DS.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Accurate digital pathology image analysis depends on high-quality images. As such, it is imperative to obtain digital images with high resolution for downstream data analysis. While hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained tissue section slides from solid tumors contain three-dimensional information, these data have been ignored in digital pathology. In addition, in cytology and bone marrow aspirate smears, the three-dimensional nature of the specimen has precluded efficient analysis of such morphologic data. An individual image snapshot at a single focal distance is often not sufficient for accurate diagnoses and multiple whole-slide images at different focal distances are necessary for diagnostics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We describe a novel computational pipeline and processing program for obtaining a super-resolved image from multiple static images at different z-planes in overlapping but separate frames. This program, MULTI-Z, performs image alignment, Gaussian smoothing, and Laplacian filtering to construct a final super-resolution image from multiple images. RESULTS: We applied this algorithm and program to images of cytology and H&E-stained sections and demonstrated significant improvements in both resolution and image quality by objective data analyses (24% increase in sharpness and focus). CONCLUSIONS: With the use of our program, super-resolved images of cytology and H&E-stained tissue sections can be obtained to potentially allow for more optimal downstream computational analysis. This method is applicable to whole-slide scanned images.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Informed consent is an integral part of clinical practice. Improper informed consent can lead to mistrust between doctors and patients as well as medico-legal issues. Awareness and knowledge of various aspects of consent is essential in present day medical practice. METHODS: A paper and web-based survey was undertaken to evaluate knowledge about informed consent among doctors. A law and a medical student generated a list of questions based upon available case laws and legislations which were further validated by experts. 500 doctors undertook the survey and of these 457 completed the survey of 18 questions. Both univariate and multivariate models were used to analyze responses. RESULTS: 413 complete questionnaires were included in the analysis. The proportion of respondents furnishing correct responses varied between 49.6% and 93.7%. There were 9 questions for which, over 25% respondents provided inappropriate responses. The questions included those enquiring whether initial consent for diagnostic or therapeutic procedures could apply to extended procedures or surgery and who was capable of giving consent for different procedures. There were significant differences of knowledge between residents and consultants for few questions. The physicians fared worse than surgeons and anesthetists although the difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Significant knowledge gaps were identified. There were deficiencies in providing correct response particularly in practical scenarios. There is a need to include knowledge about different aspects of informed consent in the medical curriculum.

RESUMO

Increasing amount of wastes is posing great difficulties for all countries across the world. The problem of waste management is more severe in developing countries such as India where the rates of economic growth and urbanization are increasing at a fast pace. The governments in these countries are often constrained by limited technical and financial capabilities, which prevent them from effectively addressing these problems. There is a limited participation from the private players too in terms of setting up of waste recycling units. The present study aims at identifying various barriers that challenge the establishment of these units, specific to India. Further, it attempts to identify the most influential barriers by utilizing multicriterion decision-making tools of interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and decision-making trail and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL). The findings of the study suggest that the lack of funds, input material, and subsidy are the most influential barriers that are needed to be addressed for the development of waste recycling infrastructure in India. IMPLICATIONS: This work has been carried out to address the problem of proper waste management in India. To deal with this problem, the method of waste recycling has been felt appropriate by the government of various countries, including India. Therefore, the barriers that play vital role in waste recycling for private players have been identified and their importance has been established with the help of ISM and DEMATEL methods. Doing so will assist the government to take appropriate steps for the betterment of waste recycling infrastructure in India and enhance waste management.

RESUMO

Secondary batteries are important energy storage devices for a mobile equipment, an electric car, and a large-scale energy storage. Nevertheless, variation of the local electronic state of the battery materials in the charge (or oxidization) process are still unclear. Here, we investigated the local electronic state of cobalt-hexacyanoferrate (Na x Co[Fe(CN)6]0.9), by means of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) with high energy resolution (~100 meV). The L-edge RIXS is one of the most powerful spectroscopic technique with element- and valence-selectivity. We found that the local electronic state around Co2+ in the partially-charged Na1.1Co2+0.5Co3+0.5[Fe2+(CN)6]0.9 film (x = 1.1) is the same as that of the discharged Na1.6Co2+[Fe2+(CN)6]0.9 film (x = 1.6) within the energy resolution, indicating that the local electronic state around Co2+ is invariant against the partial oxidization. In addition, the local electronic state around the oxidized Co3+ is essentially the same as that of the fully-charged film Co3+[Fe2+(CN)6]0.3[Fe3+(CN)6]0.6 (x = 0.0) film. Such a strong localization of the oxidized Co3+ state is advantageous for the reversibility of the redox process, since the localization reduces extra reaction within the materials and resultant deterioration.

RESUMO

In the present study, optical constants of e-beam-deposited zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) thin film are determined in the 55-150 Å soft x-ray wavelength region using the angle-dependent reflectivity technique. Soft x-ray reflectivity measurements are carried out using the reflectivity beamline at the Indus-1 synchrotron radiation source. Derived optical constants (δ and ß) are compared with the tabulated values of Henke et al. [http://henke.lbl.gov/optical_constants/asf.html]. It is found that the measured δ values are consistently lower than the tabulated bulk values in the 70-150 Å wavelength region. In this region, the delta values are lower by 19%-24% from the tabulated data. Below the Zr M4 edge (66.3 Å), a deviation in delta values is found as ∼2%-21%. These changes are attributed to growth-related defects (oxygen and voids) and variation in film stoichiometry. To the best of our knowledge, the present study gives the first reported experimental values of optical constants for ZrO2 in the 55-150 Å wavelength region.

RESUMO

Optical constants of zirconium carbide (ZrC) have been determined in the soft x-ray region of 60-200 Å wavelength using angle-dependent x-ray reflectivity measurements. Reflectivity measurements are carried out at the reflectivity beamline of the Indus-1 synchrotron radiation source. Derived optical constants (δ and ß) are compared with the tabulated values [At. Data Nucl. Data Tables 54, 181 (1993)]. The optical constants are 15%-35% lower than bulk values in the 60-200 Å wavelength region. Near the Zr M4 edge 187 eV (66.3 Å), the δ values were close to bulk values with a deviation of 5%-10%. A large deviation of ∼20% was found in beta values especially near the Zr M4 edge region, whereas it was in close agreement in the wavelength range away from the edge. To the best of our knowledge, this paper gives the first reported experimental values of optical constants for zirconium carbide in the 60-200 Å wavelength region.

RESUMO

A reverse bias tunable Pd- and Pt-functionalized graphene/Si heterostructure Schottky diode H2 sensor has been demonstrated. Compared to the graphene chemiresistor sensor, the chemi-diode sensor offers more than one order of magnitude higher sensitivity as the molecular adsorption induced Schottky barrier height change causes the heterojunction current to vary exponentially in reverse bias. The reverse bias operation also enables low power consumption, as well as modulation of the atomically thin graphene's Fermi level, leading to tunable sensitivity and detection of H2 down to the sub-ppm range.

RESUMO

A new chemical sensor based on reverse-biased graphene/Si heterojunction diode has been developed that exhibits extremely high bias-dependent molecular detection sensitivity and low operating power. The device takes advantage of graphene's atomically thin nature, which enables molecular adsorption on its surface to directly alter graphene/Si interface barrier height, thus affecting the junction current exponentially when operated in reverse bias and resulting in ultrahigh sensitivity. By operating the device in reverse bias, the work function of graphene, and hence the barrier height at the graphene/Si heterointerface, can be controlled by the bias magnitude, leading to a wide tunability of the molecular detection sensitivity. Such sensitivity control is also possible by carefully selecting the graphene/Si heterojunction Schottky barrier height. Compared to a conventional graphene amperometric sensor fabricated on the same chip, the proposed sensor demonstrated 13 times higher sensitivity for NO2 and 3 times higher for NH3 in ambient conditions, while consuming ∼500 times less power for same magnitude of applied voltage bias. The sensing mechanism based on heterojunction Schottky barrier height change has been confirmed using capacitance-voltage measurements.
